The adjoining statistical information shows that since last five decades there has been a steady increase in the supply demand gap for Water Supply of Chennai.

Exploitation of all the available sources of water is the main reason for the continual shortfall in supply of water against the growing Demand.

 

Sources of drinking water to Chennai City


Surface Water :


» Three Reservoirs namely Poondi, Cholavaram    and Red    hills,30 km away from Chennai.

» Chembarambakkam lake is supplementing    the City    water   supply from the year    2000.

» Kandaleru Reservoir in Andhra Pradesh under   Telugu    Ganga Project.

» Veeranam Lake 228 km South of    Chennai(from    Sep’04).


Ground Water :


» Ground water from Bore wells in the Araniyar    & Koratalaiyar   river basin adjoining the    reservoirs    around Chennai.

» Ground water from Bore wells in Neyveli    aquifer. (May 04) 

» Wells are both owned as well as hired.

Future :

Seawater desalination has been considered as a long term water source. Seawater also contributes to reduce the supply demand gap as it is the most dependable source during drought.
